It turns out that the intake manifold pressure sensor on the Mégane RS 250 Cup had become dislodged. This explanation makes sense, since the engine stopped working properly immediately after a sudden shutoff after working hard up a hill. The increase in pressure seems to have simply blown it out. It also explains why, when we limped home, the engine made a hissing noise under anything but the lightest acceleration.
